Although education is free in government schools, children still face challenges that hinder them from benefiting fully from this right to education. The challenges they face vary for each child in each village or city, but they are not so different for those who are poor.

In city schools, though school uniforms are generally supplied at no cost, the families of these children are often not able to afford shoes, books or other school materials. Lack of materials might slow their academic progress, but lack of simple basics such as footwear make the child a vulnerable target for teasing and social isolation.

In rural schools, the uniform is an additional expense for the students and their families, and the schools generally do not have the resources to provide food for their students. Here, meeting even the barest necessities of a school may be a challenge.

And so, although Ghana provides free primary and secondary education, there are many problems children face as students. Many end up joining their parents or guardians with their daily work instead of pursuing education to eliminate the expense of their families sending them to school.

BFG wants to support those children in need who have academic potential. The Scholarship Project is established to provide select children with the necessary materials and clothing at the beginning of every term. It is our hope that by providing some financial support, these children will be able to stay enrolled in school.

You can choose to support a specific child every term or to donate to the Scholarship Project as a whole. Supporting a child for an extended period is encouraged so that you might be able to establish a relationship with the child as he or she grows (letters will be involved). The recommended minimum amount for the first 3-month term of supporting a child is 50 USD
