Executive Summary

BFGGHANA proposes the construction and furnishing of a modern school library for Kwansakrom AEDA ‘A’ Basic School, located in Kwansakrom, Agona Swedru, Ghana.

Established in 1962, the school currently serves 277 pupils with a dedicated team of 19 teaching staff. While the school has access to electricity, potable water, and an ICT laboratory, it lacks a purpose-built library to support reading, research, and independent learning. The current library and computer laboratory operate from a converted storage room, which is too small and inadequate to meet the educational needs of the growing student population.

The proposed project will involve the construction of a purpose-built library, the provision of quality furniture and shelving, and the supply of more than 1,000 age-appropriate books and learning resources aligned with the Ghana Education Service curriculum. The completed facility will provide pupils with a safe, child-friendly, and stimulating learning environment that promotes literacy, strengthens research skills, improves academic performance, and nurtures a lifelong culture of reading.

Problem Statement / Needs Assessment

Kwansakrom is a rapidly growing community within the Agona Swedru Municipality, where the primary occupations include farming, trading, and small-scale construction. As the community continues to expand, education remains one of the most important pathways to improving livelihoods and reducing poverty.

Kwansakrom AEDA ‘A’ Basic School currently enrols 277 pupils and is supported by 19 staff members (8 male and 11 female). The school consists of a nine-classroom block, a headteacher’s office, and a staff common room. In recognition of the importance of literacy and digital education, the school converted its only storage room into a combined library and ICT laboratory. Although this demonstrates the school’s commitment to improving learning opportunities, the available space is overcrowded, unsuitable, and unable to adequately serve both purposes.

The absence of a dedicated library significantly limits pupils’ access to books and other educational resources. As a result, many children have few opportunities to develop strong reading habits, conduct independent research, or strengthen their literacy skills beyond the classroom. A purpose-built library is therefore essential to creating an environment where pupils can read, learn, and develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed for future success.

Specific Objectives

• Provide adequate bookshelves, furniture, and reading space to accommodate approximately 40–50 pupils at a time.
