WOODITGH

WOODITGH is one of BFGGHANA’s sustainability initiatives, created to reduce wood waste, protect the environment, and generate long-term social and economic value for the communities we serve.

Wood is an essential material in many of our projects. From roofing structures and window frames to classroom furniture and teacher’s desks, it is a vital component in the construction and renovation of schools. Over the years, this dependence on timber has challenged us to think differently about how wood is sourced and used. Rather than relying solely on newly harvested timber, we saw an opportunity to recover and reuse wood that would otherwise be discarded.

In Ghana, deforestation remains one of the country’s most pressing environmental challenges. Rapid agricultural expansion, illegal logging, bushfires, and unsustainable land-use practices continue to reduce forest cover, threatening biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems, and accelerating the effects of climate change.

At the same time, the timber industry generates large amounts of wood waste. Many usable logs are abandoned in forests because they contain natural defects, while timber-processing companies often discard offcuts and leftover pieces that do not meet commercial specifications. Much of this wood is left to rot or is simply burned, contributing to unnecessary waste and environmental pollution.

Recognizing this opportunity, BFGGHANA launched a pilot initiative in 2022 called “Upcycling of Wood.” The pilot focused on two main objectives:

  • Working with the Forestry Commission and timber contractors to recover neglected or rejected wood from forests and processing sites.
  • Finding innovative ways to transform timber waste into useful products for schools and communities.

The pilot proved highly successful. Recovered timber was transformed into classroom furniture, including teachers’ desks, student desks, benches, and chairs. It was also used to produce tree identification labels, educational signs, and environmental awareness boards such as “Please Don’t Litter.” These products not only reduced waste but also lowered construction costs for the schools we support.

The success of the pilot led to the creation of WOODITGH—a name inspired by the phrase “Wood Ditch,” symbolizing our commitment to rescuing wood that would otherwise be thrown away.

Today, WOODITGH gives discarded timber a second life by transforming it into quality furniture, home décor, educational materials, and handcrafted wooden products. Whenever possible, reclaimed wood is also used in BFGGHANA’s school construction projects, helping reduce the demand for newly harvested timber while maximizing the value of existing resources.

Beyond wood recovery, WOODITGH actively contributes to environmental restoration through tree planting and afforestation. For every batch of reclaimed timber processed, we invest in planting new trees within the communities where we work. Our long-term goal is to plant more than 4,000 trees each year across Ghana, helping to restore degraded landscapes, protect watersheds, increase biodiversity, and combat climate change.

WOODITGH demonstrates that waste can become opportunity. By reclaiming timber that would otherwise be lost, we reduce pressure on Ghana’s forests, support sustainable construction, create employment opportunities, and generate income that helps fund BFGGHANA’s educational and community development programs. Through this circular approach, every piece of reclaimed wood contributes to building stronger communities while protecting the environment for future generations.
